Job Description:

Senior Position: Pediatric Gastroenterologist, Clinical Director

This Position: We are seeking board-certified/board-eligible pediatric gastroenterologist with > 8 years of experience in Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. Those with a specific expertise in building and running a strong clinical program are highly encouraged to apply. Specific interests in areas of education or research, including intestinal rehabilitation, general gastroenterology, QI or safety are also encouraged. The overall goal for the next stages of growth for the Division and system will require someone with a substantial drive and skillset to assist and coordinate top-tier care, research, and community outreach.

The Division is growing and currently composed of 14 physicians (MD, DO & MD/PhD) and 7 PhD faculty members, 5 Nurse Practitioners/Physician Assistants, and a team of nurses, dieticians, social workers, psychologists, transplant coordinators and support staff with the common mission of improving the digestive health of children.

Clinical : The Division uses a comprehensive family-focused approach to engage parents in their child’s healthcare. Annually, this Division sees over 6743 Inpatient and 9968 Outpatient encounters and performs over 1746 procedures. Members of the Division sees patients at multiple location in the Atlanta area, centered at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta-Egleston campus, and other neighborhood locations in the greater Atlanta area. A 260,000 sq. ft. Center for Advanced Pediatrics (CAP) is slated to open in 2018 and will house GI, Hepatology and 16 other pediatric specialties. Recently, plans for a new 440+bed Hospital adjacent to the CAP were announced ( www.choabreakingnewground.org .)

The Division is engaged in multiple areas of Specialty care, including:

  • Aerodigestive Center of Excellence- ACE

  • Eosinophilic GI Disease clinic- EGID

  • IBD: Comprehensive Clinical and research program

  • Intestinal rehabilitation (Intestinal Rehabilitation of Children’s- IRoC)

  • Weight and wellness – Strong4Life Clinic

  • (Integrated Enteral feeds Advancement Team Clinic- (iEAT)

  • Autism clinic

  • Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD Clinic)

  • Biliary atresia and cholestatic diseases

  • Liver Transplantation and Teen Transition Clinic (currently care for > 450 liver transplant recipients). 34 Liver Transplants performed in 2016

  • Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy (ERCP and small bowel enteroscopy)

Research : Of the current 14 clinical faculty in the Division of GHN, 8 are supported by extramural funding (61%) for Basic & Clinical Research. Currently, this Division is being supported by $6 million in extramural funds (NIDDK $3.5 million). We are engaged in multiple NIH and non-NIH funded clinical studies:

  • Liver : ChiLDReN, ITCH, PRIME, PUSH, NASH CRN, SPLIT, & several industry-supported trials

  • IBD : ICN, RISK and PROTECT and several industry-supported trials

  • Pancreas/CF : INSPIRRE

Emory University's Department of Pediatrics Including Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Ranked in top 4 for Research Grants from the NIH (nearly $40 million).

Training : There are 6 Gastroenterology/Hepatology Fellows and 1 Advanced Transplant Hepatology Fellow in the ACGME-accredited Training Program within the Division. A T32 Training Grant focused upon “Translational Research” can support bench and clinical research as well as a Master’s in Clinical Research Degree at Emory.
