*About the Atlanta VA Medical Center: *The Atlanta VA Medical Center has 405 authorized inpatient beds (273 in the hospital, 120 Community Living Center, and 12 PRRTP) and is a tertiary care facility classified as a Complexity Level 1A facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services complete with state-of-the-art technology, education, and research. Comprehensive health care is provided through emergency medicine, primary care, tertiary care, and long-term care in the areas of medicine, surgery, mental health, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, and extended care. The Atlanta VA Medical Center is part of the VA Southeast Network (VISN 7), which includes facilities in Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina. The Atlanta VA Medical Center Community Living Center serves metro Atlanta and includes extended care rehabilitation, psycho-geriatric care, and general long term care. The facility also serves as a prosthetics treatment center, fabricating and supplying mechanical devices such as artificial limbs for patients within the states of Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama. Responsibilities

The Nursing Assistants will be assigned to the Trinka Davis Veterans Village Community Living Center located in Carrollton, Georgia.The Community Living Center Nursing Assistant consistently demonstrates knowledge of resident care, utilize critical thinking skills, clinical competence and knowledge of the practices and procedures which he/she coordinates at the resident bedside.

Main duties, skills and abilities required but not limited to:

Maintain good communication with Nurse Manager, nursing staff and other facility staff. Serve as a liaison between charge nurse, Nurse Manager, and NAs.

Communicate and interact appropriately and courteously with internal and external customers.

Functions as a NA on their assigned shift, notifies shift RN, LPN and other NAs of changes in the nursing department, in resident's conditions, and relay any problems to the charge nurse or Nurse Manager ensuring effective hand off during shift change.

Will demonstrate interdepartmental teamwork.

Maintains a working knowledge of all policies and procedures pertaining to the position.

Conducts peer reviews and monitor to ensure that services are being delivered to resident properly and as prescribed.

Serves as a preceptor to new CNAs by assisting with the coordination of their practical experience while the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting.

Recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.

*Work Schedule: *Sunday through Saturday- 7:30 pm - 8:00 am (every other weekend) NIGHT SHIFT ONLY

Physical Requirements:This position requires walking, standing, stooping, lifting (not more than 10 lbs.), bending, pushing (not more than 10 lbs), and pulling (not more than 10 lbs.). Must be able to utilize good body mechanics and have stamina to withstand stress.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education or Training. One year above high school with courses related to the occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3.

  • English Language Proficiency. Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

  • Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Grade Determinations: GS-5 (Full Performance Level)

Experience. One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs below;

*Education. *Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree; AND

Demonstrated KSAs:

  1. Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse.

  2. Ability to communicate orally with patients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new [NAs] by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting.

  3. Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.

Assignment.This is the full performance level for NAs. NAs at this grade level function as a member of the nursing care team and assist licensed nursing staff in the care of patients/residents receiving outpatient care, home or community living care or other patients/residents who are in acute, sub-acute or chronic states of illness. The distinguishing factor is that patient/resident assignments typically involve more complex nursing needs which can vary within a range of predictable to unpredictable requirements. NAs at this level also assume more of a peer education/mentorship role.
