The Atlanta VA Medical Center has 405 authorized inpatient beds (273 in the hospital, 120 Community Living Center, and 12 PRRTP) and is a tertiary care facility classified as a Complexity Level 1A facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services complete with state-of-the-art technology, education, and research. Comprehensive health care is provided through emergency medicine, primary care, tertiary care, and long-term care in the areas of medicine, surgery, mental health, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, and extended care. The Atlanta VA Medical Center is part of the VA Southeast Network (VISN 7), which includes facilities in Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina. The Atlanta VA Medical Center Community Living Center serves metro Atlanta and includes extended care rehabilitation, psycho-geriatric care, and general long term care. The facility also serves as a prosthetics treatment center, fabricating and supplying mechanical devices such as artificial limbs for patients within the states of Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama.

The Radiology Service at the Atlanta VA Medical Center in Decatur, Georgia provides general and subspecialty imaging, diagnostic and interventional services for inpatient, outpatient and emergency patients.

The Diagnostic Radiology Service is a large multispecialty department with over 100 employees and comprises the following sections: General Radiology including Fluoroscopy, Ultrasound, CT, MRI, Vascular and Interventional Radiology.

Each of these divisions has its own special procedures and systems of patient flow and scheduling, quality monitoring and maintenance, and compliance standards and regulations.

Duties

The Assistant Chief of Radiology must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide all required general diagnostic services with additional competence in Interventional and Invasive procedures.

The Assistant Chief of Radiology is administratively and clinically responsible for assigned radiology staff and service programs including utilization review of high-cost/high-demand exams.

The successful candidate will be a board-certified/board eligible, highly competent, dynamic physician with demonstrated excellence as a leader, a passion for teamwork and continuous improvement.

The Assistant Chief of Radiology is accountable to the Manager of Radiology Service for assuring the most effective delivery of care in Radiology while exceeding compliance standards.

If selected for this position you will serve as direct supervisor to staff radiologists and other assigned personnel.

You will perform clinical duties as a diagnostic radiologist providing interpretive and patient care services within the scope of diagnostic radiology.

You must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide all required general diagnostic services with additional competence in interventional and invasive procedures.

You should possess sufficient computer skills necessary to work with advanced electronic medical record, PACS and voice recognition systems.

You should have sufficient radiology technical and physics skills to manage imaging equipment protocols, perform fluoroscopic and ultrasound procedures and oversee the clinical review, quality and safety programs.

The majority of your time will be devoted to clinical care with sufficient time for administrative duties as assigned by the Manager, Radiology Service.

Atlanta VAMC has numerous academic and training school affiliations, including but not limited to Emory University School of Medicine, Morehouse School of Medicine and Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency Program.

Qualifications

Following are the overall requirements for appointment as a physician in VHA.

a. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)

b. Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:

(1) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.

(2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.

(3) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.

(4) For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required except as provided in M-8, part II, chapter 1.

c. Licensure and Registration

(1) Physicians (Except Residents). Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. The facility Director may waive this licensure requirement if the physician is to serve in a country other than the United States and the physician has licensure in that country.

(2) Residents. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia before the second year of VA residency, or meet any licensure, registration or other equivalent requirements established for residents of non-VA hospitals with which the VA facility is affiliated for training purposes. The resident must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.

(3) Impaired Licensure. A physician who has, or has ever had, any license(s) revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or issued/placed in a probationary status may be appointed only in accordance with the provisions of chapter 3, section B, paragraph 14 of this part.

(4) Waiver of Licensure. Licensure may be waived by the Under Secretary for Health or designee in Central Office for individuals in research or academic assignments involving no direct patient care responsibilities in accordance with current regulations.

d. First-Year Residency (Internship).Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed. For a VA resident, the appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment on the basis of the candidate's acceptability for residency training. Approved residencies are:

(1) Those approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals, American Medical Association, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or

(2) Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met if the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.

e. Physical Standards. Applicants must meet physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. This is a designated drug testing position. After appointment, you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use. Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing (approx. 2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Must have depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Hearing aid is permitted.

f. English Language Proficiency. Physicians, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).

Preferred Experience

  1. Board certified through the American Board of Radiology

  2. Current experience in performing Invasive and/or interventional radiology procedures and active ACLS certification

  3. Additional experience in other diagnostic radiology specialty areas outside of interventional/invasive radiology

  4. Previous work experience in a VA Medical Center (hospital, 1A complexity)

  5. Evidence of leadership skills or similar service as a practicing radiologist
